Heritage Event: Living the Italian Canadian Experience

Immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of Italian heritage at the Italian Canadian Historical Centre. This engaging event celebrates the rich history and cultural contributions of the local Italian community through its exhibits and an expert panel discussion. From its displays showcasing Italian community artifacts and history to an inspiring talk by community leaders on immigration stories and cultural influences, attendees will delve deep into the essence of Italian identity in Ottawa.

This event is presented by Italian Week Ottawa in collaboration with the National Congress of Italian Canadians (NCIC) (National Capital District).

Moderator: Trina Costantini-Powell

Trina was President of the National Congress of Italian Canadians from 2016-2022 and currently is the Second Vice-President, NCIC National. Trina has, for over 30 years, chaired many Italian Canadian associations and contributed to many other Ottawa organizations. Trina currently sits on the Villa Marconi Board of Directors. An Ottawa Women’s Filo Award recipient in 2010, followed by Leading Girls, Leading Women’s Award (2014) and the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (2017). Trina acts as the Research and Nominations Committee Chair, Ottawa Distinguished Women.

Guest Panelists

Pasquale (Pat) Nicastro has had a connection to the culinary world from an early age. During his formative years, Pat diligently contributed to his father’s grocery store, dedicating his free time after school and on weekends. Following his graduation from university, Pat recognized a market opportunity for an authentic Italian market in downtown Ottawa. He opened La Bottega Nicastro in the Byward Market in May of 1995. 



Bob Chiarelli was born and raised in Ottawa. He grew up in the neighbourhood near Preston Street, often referred to as  ‘Little Italy’. He graduated from law school at the University of Ottawa in 1967 and began a legal practice in Ottawa specializing in corporate law. In 1987 Bob entered political life, serving from 1987 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2018 representing the ridings of Ottawa West and Ottawa West—Nepean. He was the Regional Chair of Ottawa-Carleton from 1997 to 2001 and was mayor of Ottawa from 2001 to 2006. Bob is a member of the Ottawa Kiwanis Club and sits on the board of the R.A. Centre.



Francesco Campanile has been a licensed psychologist in Italy since 2013, and has been authorized to practice psychotherapy in his home country since 2018. After moving to Ottawa at the end of 2021, he received a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) license from the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (June 2022). Francesco is skilled in interpersonal psychoanalysis, a theoretical framework that allows him to provide psychotherapeutic treatments to individuals, families, couples, and groups affected by different mental health issues and illnesses. Today, he offers his services in his private office located in Centretown, Ottawa.
